For many years, Mental Health Issues have not received the needed attention and visibility in our part of the world. Many of us are unaware of just how much these issues affect our well being, our social and even economic lives. As part of efforts to help bring Mental Health to the forefront and to extend aid to the many people who may be suffering from complications, the Rotary Club of Accra South in collaboration with its partners (including the Ghana Psychological Association, The Psychology Dept of the University of Ghana and The Mental Health Authority) is embarking on a project: the building of a Mental Health Resource Center, with a fully functional library, consulting rooms and call center among others.
On the 9th of October, a commemorative event will be held at the Academy of Arts and Sciences from 3:30pm to 6pm at which a panel of experts will hold a discussion on the theme “Depression on the Mental health ladder: Healthcare Neglect and Economic Cost”. It is hoped that this event will help us break down pertinent issues including the economics and politics of mental health and free us up to educate the general populace.
Additionally, the Rotary Club will launch its Mental Health Resource Center Project at this event as we take first steps towards touching the lives of the people.
