Health and Hope in Abume and Frankadua

On a bright and hopeful morning of August 5th, 2023, Rotarians from over 50 clubs gathered in Abume, in the Volta region, carrying the banner of this year’s Rotary theme, “create hope in the world.” The day was filled with inspiration, health, and greenery, all aimed at bettering lives and providing a beacon of hope.

The bustling energy of Rotarians filled the air as the Health Screening event, organized by Rotary Club of Akosombo Dam City, unfolded. The mission was profound: to educate the residents on Bilharziasis and inspire them to take better care of their health. A fleet of dedicated doctors was on hand, performing screenings for dental health, ear, nose, and throat conditions, deworming, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Residents beamed with gratitude as they were given opportunities to apply and renew their NHIS subscription.

But that was just the beginning.

After leaving a mark of health in Abume, we, the Rotary Club of Accra-South, continued our journey of hope to Frankadua, to The Baptist Vocational Centre. A 10-acre land rich with potential but threatened by encroachment called for our attention. The Centre requested seedlings for woodlot that could be harvested for firewood or charcoal. Most importantly, it would secure the land from encroachers.

A sense of nostalgia filled the air as we reminisced about our previous contributions to the Centre in 2018. We were back, and with purpose. A thousand seedlings were supplied, and with the guidance of Assistant Principal Rev. Obani, we joined hands with the young women of the Centre to plant 400 ceiba, 300 teak, and 300 afram trees.

The act of planting a tree, a symbol of growth, resilience, and hope, resonated deeply with our mission. We were not just planting trees; we were sowing seeds of hope and security.

Our hearts swelled with pride as we discovered that our past donations were still in use and had significantly benefited the young women. The connection was made; a few of our Rotarians engaged in heartfelt conversations, encouraging these bright young souls to pursue their dreams.

The day was a triumph of Rotary’s theme, a testimony to what we can achieve when we strive to “create hope in the world.” Through health, education, and nurturing the environment, we were not merely providing for the present but investing in a future filled with hope, growth, and endless possibilities. Here’s to a world where we continue to sow seeds of change, one act of kindness at a time! 🌱 #ServiceAboveSelf #CreateHopeIntheWorld
