Today’s meeting was our lightning session on the theme for the month: “Basic Education and Literacy” it was a time to delve deep into what we can do in our communities to supports activities and training to improve education for all children and literacy for both children and adults.
As far as Rotary goes, The Rotary Foundation enables Rotarians to ensure that all people have sustainable access to basic education and literacy by, Involving the community to support programs that strengthen the capacity of communities to provide basic education and literacy to all, Increasing adult literacy in communities, Working to reduce gender disparity in education and Supporting studies for career-minded professionals related to basic education and literacy.
In this regard we invited Regina Honu to our club to speak about her work with her Soronko Solutions. At our meeting Regina gave a talk on educating our youth to propel development, where she spoke about the work she is doing with Soronko Academy and the young girls she has trained to acquire coding and software skills. She was of the view that by 2020 there will be a million more computing jobs than people qualified to do them. She also stressed the importance of having good role models/mentors for young people.
We need to encourage kids to start learning IT at a young age and encourage them to be confident.

Regina has recently opened the first coding and human centered design school for children and young adults called Soronko Academy. She was featured on CNN as one the 12 inspirational women who rock STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Featured on CNN’s African Voices, and African Startups. Her story was published in the Lean In for Graduates by Sheryl Sandberg COO of Facebook, Impatient Optimist blog by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
Regina loves to mentor and she is an online mentor with the Women’s Tech Connect Global Mentoring program. She was awarded a Women of Courage Award for Technology and Tech Needs Girls was awarded in the Ghana CSR Diary Awards.
