Press Release: Tree Planting Project

PRESS STATEMENT
TREE PLANTING PROJECT

The Rotary Club of Accra-South in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Accra-Spintex

SAPS School, GREDA Estates, Teshie-Nungua, Tuesday 12 December 2017.

Rotary International (RI) is a global network of 1.2 million neighbours, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad.  Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary members have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to better our world, and we stay committed to the end. There are 47 Rotary Clubs in Ghana.

Rotary members believe that we have a shared responsibility to take action on our world’s most persistent issues. Our 35,000+ clubs work together to: promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, save mothers and children, support education and grow local economies. Our motto is Service above Self

Rotarians are:

  • Community-Builders: We collaborate with community leaders who want to get to work on projects that have a real, lasting impact on people’s lives.
  • People of Action: We connect passionate people with diverse perspectives to exchange ideas, forge lifelong friendships, and, above all, take action to change the world.
  • Problem-Solvers: Together, we apply our professional experience and personal commitment to tackle our communities’ most persistent problems, finding new, effective ways to enhance health, stability, and prosperity across the globe.
  • Opportunity-Creators: Rotary members look for opportunities to improve our communities today and invest in the next generation for tomorrow.

RI President Ian Riseley is asking Rotary members to work together to advance the tradition of Rotary: Making a Difference in 2017-18.  He is challenging all 1.2 million Rotarians to plant a tree before Earth Day on 22 April 2018. Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. According to RI President Ian Riseley, “The greater result will be a Rotary that recognizes our responsibility not only to the people on our planet, but to the planet itself”

In acceptance of the challenge by the RI President the Rotary Club of Accra-Spintex in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Accra-South last Friday 8 December 2017 planted 50 seedlings at the Sakumono Kindergarten and Primary School, Sakumono.  Today the Rotary Club of Accra-South in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Accra-Spintex will plant 100 seedlings here at the SAPS School. The work involved in sustenance and upkeep of the trees we plant today will result in reviving the schools Evergreen club.

Trees are engines for economic development providing high nutrition foods for humans, animals, wildlife and insects, sustainable building materials and fuel, canopies in urban areas to cool, reduce energy use, absorb pollution and increase property values. Trees also protect our environment and increase ground water recharge, prevent runoff and loss of soil, create habitat for wildlife, produce oxygen, use carbon dioxide thus improving public health and slow global warming by storing carbon.

The Rotary Club of Accra-South is grateful for the support of the Forest Services Division of the Forestry Commission who not only provided us with the seedlings but gave us technical advice on the planting process. We are also grateful to the SAPS School for their collaboration and support in this effort.
