RCAS
Our history as a club

The Rotary club of Accra South is one of the most active and vibrant Rotary club in Ghana.

The Rotary Club of Accra South (RCAS) was born on 8th August 2000 after a long and arduous 2-year labor. The Club had been a provisional one for almost 2 years prior to its charter. The words of DG Representative, PP Edwin Sam, could not have rung truer when, in his congratulatory message to the club during our charter, he emphasized the fact that “… I know the trying times we went through together to arrive at this point. I believe that this has helped to build resilience in the Club.” Ne’er a truer word spoken! Like any enterprise borne out of diligence and determination, our 11-year old Club is presently a vibrant, dynamic club of which we are all justifiably proud. Members of RCAS are not merely members of a Rotary Club: they are true Rotarians!

On August 8, 2000, another Club was added to the family of Rotary in Ghana.

The Club’s Charter Night ball was held on Friday, March 23, 2001 at the Conference Hall of the Trade Fair Site. In attendance was the then District Governor, Rtn Batio Joseph Bassole, Rotarian President David Ofosu-Dorte, DG Rep PP Edwin Sam and a large number of members of other Clubs. The charter night was a truly celebratory event after 2 years of being a provisional Club.

It is to the credit of our Club that almost all charter members who are no longer members of the Club are non-members because they no longer reside in Ghana. At its inception, the Club was represented by a diversity of professions  – legal, pharmacy, gender consultancy, banking executives, farming, artist, travel agency, etc.

The Club has retained the tradition of trying to have as diverse a range of classifications as possible and we can count in our current membership hospitality management, real estate development, graphic & fine arts, private investigation, architecture, avionics, veterinary services and electricity generation, to name but a few.

The Rotary Club of Accra South was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Accra East under the direct mentorship of PP Edwin Sam, then District Governor’s Representative. The Rotary theme for the year of our charter – Create Awareness, Take Action, was auspicious indeed as in the years since our charter, we have individually and collectively sought to create awareness and take appropriate action in furtherance of the ideas and ideals of Rotary.

Rotarian President David (Ofosu-Dorte) of our sponsoring club in congratulating the members of the new club, reminded charter members that “…you manifest those qualities of head and heart that fit you to interpret and impart the message of Rotary”.  The 2000-2001 RI President, Rtn Frank J. Devlyn welcomed RCAS to membership of the 29,000-strong family of Rotary clubs at the time by reminding RCAS that “The success of Rotary as a whole depends on the service efforts of each individual Club. By strengthening and developing your own Club, you will be contributing to the capacity of Rotary International to do good”.
