ABOUT DISTRICT 9102

Rotary International District 9100 which comprises 14 West African Countries  (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Togo) is recognized as the largest geographical District in the Rotary world. It was created in 1985 and uses three official languages: English, French, and Portuguese. The Doyen Club of Dakar was chartered on 10 July, 1939. Thereafter, Rotary gradually spread through Cote d’Ivoire, Cameroon, until it reached the first Anglophone country, Ghana, in 1958. In rapid succession, Rotary was received in Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Benin, Niger and Togo, in that order, so that by 1968 there were twelve countries which had embraced Rotary.

The first West Africa Rotary Convention took place in Accra from 21-23 March, 1968. Between the Rotary years 1968-69 and 1972-73, Rotary International (RI) appointed Administrative Co-ordinators or Advisors to oversee the emerging Clubs in these twelve countries. Meanwhile, the Convention became an annual affair, until the fifth West Africa Rotary Convention took place again in Accra from 9-12 March, 1972. That meeting was the turning point in the history of Rotary in West Africa. RI President Ernst G. Breitholtz and his wife attended the meeting.

The number of Clubs had increased from 12 in 1968 to 33 in 1972. RI had reached the decision point to create a District for the Clubs in the sub-region. Beginning from the Rotary year 1972-73, RI created District 210 for the sub-region. And so the first ever District Assembly and Conference of District 210 took place in Francophone Togo in the city of Lome in April 1973. At that memorable meeting, Francois Amorin was declared the first District Governor Elect.

In March 2011, Rotary International took a bold decision to re-district by dividing Rotary District 9100 into two separate Districts, namely Rotary International Districts 9101, comprising Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone and Senegal; and also Rotary International District 9102 consisting of Benin, Ghana, Niger and Togo. Each of these newly created Districts will be under the leadership and supervision of a District Governor with effect from July 1st, 2013.
