A Night of Insight and Illumination: Rotary Club of Accra South Powers Up with ECG’s Managing Director

Greetings, fellow Rotarians and friends! The Rotary Club of Accra South gathered at the African Regent Hotel for our meeting on 9th May at 6:30 pm. With a fantastic turnout and an atmosphere buzzing with anticipation, we welcomed Samuel Dubik Mahama, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), who electrified us with his wit and wisdom.

Our theme for the year is “Imagine Rotary,” and what better way to spark our imaginations than by shedding light on a topic that affects every household in Ghana? With a mouthful of a title, “Prepaid or Postpaid Meters, Government, Other Agencies and Total Debt; The Way Forward” (phew!), Mr. Mahama’s talk was not only illuminating but also full of sparks, thanks to his humor and candid insights.Flyer giving details of Samuel Mahama's talk at the Rotary Club of Accra South

Collaborating with 11 other Rotary Clubs (see flyer), we huddled together to discuss the many issues that plague the ECG, and how we, as ordinary citizens, can help make the company profitable and capable of serving us to its fullest capacity. Mr. Mahama regaled us with stories of the ECG’s struggles and triumphs, and took us on a journey through the world of meters, their recent revenue mobilization, and even the ECG app. Who knew electricity could be so entertaining?

As questions from the audience flowed like a steady current, Mr. Mahama tackled each one with a mix of humor and expertise. From a hilarious anecdote about people avoiding payment to a thoughtful analysis of the ECG’s debt, the evening was anything but dull. A Rotarian suggested that tougher punitive measures be put in place to curb corruption and stealing, to which Mr. Mahama agreed.

By the end of the night, our spirits were high, and we left inspired by the potential of the ECG to become profitable, consistent, and capable if we all do the right thing. So, let’s flip the switch and start imagining a brighter future by supporting the ECG in its quest to power a better tomorrow for all Ghanaians!

Until next time, stay connected, stay charged, and let’s continue to imagine a brighter future with Rotary!
